What to do if a client falls or has a worsening in condition (i.e. trouble breathing, loss of consciousness, etc.).
THINGS TO DO:
Step 1: If the client falls:
- With no apparent injury, help them up and assist them to a chair or bed.
- If you can’t get them up, call the Fire Department
- With an injury call 911
Step 2: Then CALL US RIGHT AWAY!! It is important for you to let us know right away, so that we can make important decisions and notify family members.
Step 3: Make a detailed online, option 8 on telephony, & written log entry on the fall, including circumstances, time, etc.
THINGS NOT TO DO:
Step 1: DO NOT move the client if there appears to be an injury.
Step 2: DO NOT call the family of the client! It is OUR job to communicate with the family; therefore, it is VITAL that you call us right away and then let US call the family.
Step 3: DO NOT call Home Health unless the client is on Hospice Care.
Step 4: DO NOT make a medical judgment, give advice on treatment, or give any kind of medical treatment.
Once you notify us of a fall, we will tell you how to proceed (i.e. call Hospice, etc.). We will then consult with the family and make them aware of the situation. If they have specific instructions, we will call you back and let you know what they want you to do.
It is part of your job to help prevent falls, so please be extra diligent and careful with our clients. We appreciate all you do in giving kind and respectful care to our clients. If you have any questions about anything , please feel free to call us. Roland’s number is 275-1656 and Leslie’s is 275-1697.
